last saturday i saw Hercules & Love Affair. their show left me kinda cold without NOMI RUIZ who lent her vocals on Hercules' debut album... so i was thrilled to catch her the following monday in JESSICA 6, her new band's intimate show at Bardot's School Night, where i took the lo-fi pic above...

Every album is a learning experience and this is concentrated in music, there's no dilution. I'm comfortable in my own skin, comfortable with being in the light. I'm not just a kid from Knowle West trying to build a future, I have some experience, I can experiment, I can be honest, and honestly, musically, I can be touched. I used to hide in the shadows when i played live, now i perform. I used to hate doing interviews, now i feel honoured that people would be interested in what I have to say. I've spent my life going between cultures; Mixed Race is about that, and in a very direct way.

this brings me back the the phenomenal speech Marianne Williamson wrote for Madiba's inaugural ascension to the presidency of South Africa:

back to the music! what really does it for me here is Tricky's usage of the Peter Gunn theme as the main riff. back in the 80s' heyday of music videos, the Art of Noise's version was played often on my very first Technics...

the music doesn’t actually start until after the monkey-cat walks on the dinner table and the emperor with no clothes and a packing tape beard litters everywhere... but be patient because “y” might be my favourite iamamiwhoami so far!!! this artist (or collective thereof) couples a sense of strong self-esteem with an ego humble enough to stay original, authentic, captivating and free of over processed garbage. how refreshing!!! besides, this brilliant string of synth pop is no less than pure bliss...

equally stunning, here's BETWEEN BEARS - a haunting animated short created by Eran Hilleli for his graduation at the Bezalel Academy. while the literal message of the piece may be open for interpretation, the bleak yet graceful transgression of bold visuals paint a stark reality... i'm also impressed with the delicate precision of the music & sounds that carry the film... the entire package pulled me right in from start to finish... enjoy:

alright, i'm not a huge Kanye West fan nor do i particularly look up to him as a human being, but i have to give him this: the man gets kick ass directors to make ill videos that elevate him, his music or whatever gospel he is preaching - from Michel Gondry to MARCO BRAMBILLA...
POWER shows a continuous camera move from extreme close-up of Mr. West revealing a neoclassical video tableau showing characters and creatures surrounding him in an abstract environment - all moving in extreme slow motion. inspired by Michelangelo's frescos in the Vatican's Sistine Chapel, the piece depicts a faux historical moment - an empire on the brink of collapse from its own excess, decadence and corruption...
