Lose Yourself???

from the get go, Lose Yourself To Dance was my favourite song of Random Access Memories.  what a bummer this new video shows more clapping than actual dancing.  in fact, if Soul Train was an inspiration, why isn't anyone losing their shit with crazy ass dance moves?! considering how much money they've made with this album, doesn't Daft Punk get enough of a budget to go nuts & do something a lot less boring or lazy?  at the very least, a bit different from the previous video?!  then again, this is what happens when you let artists think they can direct their own videos instead of trusting an accomplished filmmaker do the job...  i still love the jackets, but c'mon, they're so last spring already (i.e. Get Lucky).  sighhh!  Doin' It Right quickly became my other fave; still is.  i hope they allow for a far more creative collaboration & get it right if they pick it for their next video!

NEW BEGINNINGS

New York City Ballet presents NEW BEGINNINGS on September 12, 2013. Filmed at sunrise on the 57th floor of 4WTC in lower Manhattan, this short film captures an extraordinary and moving performance of Christopher Wheeldon's After the Rain. It is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, and a tribute to the future of the city that New York City Ballet calls home. #newbeginnings

New York City Ballet on September 11, 2001
On September 11, 2001, the New York City Ballet was on a European tour that had taken the company from Edinburgh, Scotland to Athens, Greece and finally to Parma, Italy, where the company was scheduled to perform as part of the Verdi Festival at the Teatro Reggio that evening. As news of the events unfolding at home in New York began to make its way to the dancers of the New York City Ballet, the sense of fear and loss became more and more overwhelming, and Ballet Master in Chief Peter Martins ultimately decided to cancel the evening's performance.

By curtain time, the sold-out audience had arrived at the Teatro Reggio, and stood in silence and mourned with the Company and the rest of the world. Martins addressed the audience from the stage, saying "We came here to dance, it is what we do, but our hearts are breaking and it is simply not possible for us to perform this evening. But we will be back tomorrow, and we will be honored to perform for all of you then."

NYCB did perform at the Teatro Reggio the following evening, September 12th, 2001, and 12 years to the day after, New York City Ballet offers NEW BEGINNINGS, which features an international team of collaborators, including director Davi Russo who was born and raised in New York City, British choreographer Christopher Wheeldon, American dancer Maria Kowroski, Danish dancer Ask la Cour, and a ballet set to a score by the Estonian composer Arvo Part, which provides a moving backdrop to a film of profound and powerful beauty.

HER

there is no other movie i want to see more than Alfonso Cuarón's GRAVITY... except maybe Spike Jonze's very own take on science fiction - HER

SMASHING HEARTS

there's something about these kids from Oakland, California, and i dig it... they're called Smashing Hearts & Raphael Saadiq whom i love is behind them,  here's their very first video for their intro track - Red Cup...  i'll toast to that!

Andreas Nilsson plays HARD!

work hard, play hard, keep partying like it's your job!  woah, that's deep!!!  i'm no fan of David Guetta's uber cheesy music for the masses; it's like really bad 90s eurotrash electronica to me & i'm still baffled at how much of a hit that sound is with bros & their hos...  but this video is so good, i've been willing to endure this muzak for the mega clubs & tacky stores from Hollywood's Melrose to South Beach's Washington & around the world & back,  just to watch it a few times.  this is by far the best video Guetta has ever had!  ANDREAS NILSSON is absolutely brilliant!!!  if the music makes you cringe as well, watch the whole thing anyway because you're gonna love it...

12 April 2013

The Place Beyond... To The Wonder

The Place Beyond The Pines has done really well in LA & NY so far.  today it hits theaters nationwide; go see it!  as for To The Wonder, it's out today as well.  this is my favourite blurb about the film: All footage of the performances by Jessica Chastain, Rachel Weisz, Amanda Peet, Barry Pepper and Michael Sheen were removed from the final cut...  but what's left is brilliant!

BEAT MAKING LAB

Cho Cho Cho is the first song and music video produced and written by the youth of Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo. created in a Beat Making Lab, the song was inspired by a popular call-and-response chant in Goma, and the video was filmed during Yole!Africa's SKIFF Festival dance competition.
my mother might have been born in Cape Town where my Belgian grandparents lived during WWII, but she subsequently grew up in the Belgian Congo for the first 15 years of her life, precisely in Bukavu (right next to Goma)... i myself grew up knowing it as Zaire, which was still relatively calm & much safer than it is now, well, as long as my parents were in business with Mobutu & if they didn't directly profit from his presidential reign, or should i say dictatorship, then their source of income was in some way feeding his incredible wealth as well... then the cold war ended, Mobutu fell & fled to the French Riviera with his billions of dollars, interpol came down on Mobutu's former profiteers & with that my father's business went down the toilet, such as everything else in Zaire, and the country was renamed the Democratic Republic of Congo. fortunately by that time my parents had divorced & i was off to South America with my mom & my stepfather, for a much less tumultuous life that came with diplomatic immunity... anyway, all of this to say that somehow, in some way, the Congo will always have a special place in my heart. almost everyone in my mother's family lived there in colonial times & thanks to them i will one day inherit a lot of ivory & malachite for the house that i will one day be able to afford on my own (hey just keeping it superficial here, that's my thing). some of my relatives still travel to the Congo with the best interest of its people in mind & i hope i can too one day; it's the Belgian version of "white guilt" i suppose... so i'm always happy to see people get in there in spite of how dangerous & messy it has become. i love to see artists bring people together & into the light!  SUPPORT BEAT MAKING LAB!

Chris Milk ▷ Beck ▷ Bowie

although Chris Milk's HELLO AGAIN with Beck technically came out more than a week ago, Chris Milk finally finished it the way he intended.  click on image below to get to the site!
a few pointers:
(1) you'll need to do it on an actual computer, not a phone or an ipad... (2) go for the HD, even though it takes a while to download... (3) use the time to quit programs and close browser windows. It's gonna eat your CPU... (4)
use headphones, but make sure the R and L are on the correct ears to hear the special binaural sound... (5) try the different camera lenses in the upper left corner. they're my favorite part...

LisaTV @ Jeremy Scott F/W 2013

YAY!  LisaTV hits the the Jeremy Scott show at NY fashion week...
Lisa makes everything better! more magic here & here & here!  other than that, Jeremy Scott seems stuck, like he's recycling himself again & trying too hard to stay "young." maybe i'm just bored with his junk, or the fact that he's not putting any effort whatsoever into re-imagining the work of those he steals from (i.e. Jimbo Phillips).  only Lisa could pull it off & make it look more interesting, no doubt!  it's her love & appreciation for Jimbo Phillips & the other visual references, as well as her non-judgmental take on Jeremy Scott's appropriations that make this piece even more endearing.  LONG LIVE LISA TV!

CHRIS MILK + BECK doing BOWIE

Chris Milk is brilliant!  his collaboration with Beck is everything!!!  watch this cover of David Bowie's Sound & Vision with 167 other musicians.  give it a few minutes & experience the pure magic it becomes, all through the end!  for more details, read on gizmondo...

i was so lucky to be one of the guests that night; we sat on a platform that rotated around the circular stage Beck performed on, while voyaging through the waves of musicians behind us; this is what Chris Milk is recreating for an interactive experience, still in post at this time...  i took a few iphone snaps along the way.  click on them to enlarge:

Spit GOLD Under An Empire

take a breather & enjoy Emily Kai Bock's contribution to Sundance Channel's New American Noise... uninspired with the commercial rap that dominates the radio, this new guard of hip hop enthusiasts are seeking the purity of early hip hop - away from the industry & keeping things real, underground & intimate.  mad props to cinematographer Adrien Bertolle for such a splendid job:

THAT B.E.A.T.

Bounce music is about expressing yourself through dance. Bounce creates an infectious repetitive hook and beat to get the crowd moving.  Abteen Bagheri's documentary profiles the phenomenon of Bounce music, including artists such as Big Freedia, tracing its origins in New Orleans... this is a scene or movement Diplo has been covering for many years already, but this film is definitely worth it...

MIND MISCHIEF

it's such a bummer when a talented band i LOVE like The Knife, who has worked with some of the most talented directors in the past, is now looking no further than the Berlin pub scene & choses to work with a director who does a crappy job instead.  look, i'm all about giving your friends a shot, unless their work is lazy & lame...  on the flipside, it's totally exciting when a band i'm so into right now like Tame Impala choses to work with one of the most brilliant young directors around - David Wilson.  Mind Mischief is such a win-win band/director collaboration! enjoy & share the wealth:

L'écume des jours

MICHEL GONDRY applies his DIY visual effects, his deliriously fantastic touch & his gentle poetic sensibilities to adapting Boris Vian's "L'écume des jours" for the big screen...  the new trailer is splendid & i'm already madly in love with the movie before even seeing it.  i can't wait!!!  the English title of the film is Mood Indigo:
