my dear mother, Magda Delbaere-Pitout-Joubert de Kuhn, spent the first 15 years of her life growing up in Bukavu, along the mountainous shores of Lake Kivu in the Eastern Congo. here my mother's life was safe, simple & nurturing, as opposed to life today in the region...
unfortunately, many years of post colonial imperialism, dictatorship, corruption, genocide, atrocities & violent wars have lead to the demise of this extremely wealthy region (Rwanda & Burundi also border the Kivu lake)... where my mom once lived in bliss, many less fortunate women now live a life no one should endure, nor condone. tonight on HBO premieres this must-see documentary about it:
here are a few more photos of the beautiful Lake Kivu:
for those of you who can watch this documentary and are lucky enough to be in LA, far away from such a harsh reality, come celebrate your good fortune tonight at the Gold Room afterwards.
