MJ: Behind The Mask



Michael Jackson may have moonwalked to heaven almost exactly two years ago, but his legacy lives on — as evidenced by an epic crowdsourced music video out today, directed by Dennis Liu, brought to life with @radical.media's team of forward thinking producers, editors and submissions from over 1600 fans. check Michael Jackson's website & click on image below for more details on the radical soup to nuts production of this project...

since March, fans were asked to contribute dance moves, lyrics and crowd reactions to the video via a dedicated website. using a split-screen template, fans uploaded their clips at the exact moment that move, lyric or reaction occurred in the video. together, all of these fan-sourced snippets were woven into one, cohesive video. in this way, Michael Jackson reminds us once again - You Are Not Alone!

@radical.media initially aimed to release the video in April, but due to the overwhelming fan reaction — thousands of submissions from 103 countries — director Dennis Liu says it took more time to churn out the final product. more about the process in this article.

it's a privilege for me to be part of the radical team, leading the way on multiple platforms, especially with non-traditional & interactive projects — see Chris Milk for instance... although Behind The Mask isn't interactive in the way that it requires a lot of clicking to view, it drew many participants together & pushes boundaries. “In terms of the tech aspect of it, I think the goal is to have interesting content that’s really watchable. You need to view it multiple times in order to see everything.
