6th, children (and now adults as well) receive gifts from Saint Nicolas (aka Père Noël on December 25th , trans. Father Christmas i.e. Santa Claus). Saint Nicolas travels with his "shadow", a dark companion called Père Fouettard (trans. "Father Whip" aka Peter The Black aka Bogeyman) who follows Saint Nicolas & reminds him of just how each child has behaved during the past year. Saint Nicolas rewards wise children with presents. Père Fouettard seeks the misbehaving ones for a spanking or punishment with his long black whip! christianity at its best...
