YOKOGAGA

Yoko Ono is a the ultimate muse, within the avant-garde & conceptual art to politics & pop culture at large... a pivotal force who has survived incredible odds, Ono continues to challenge the status quo. she has reminded us that we are free & capable of change, long before the rhetoric resurfaced with Obama's campaign... Yoko Ono is a living breathing haiku, whom Ann Magnuson has qualified better than anyone else when she said:
THERE'S A REASON THE COOLEST GUY IN THE WORLD FELL IN LOVE WITH HER!

so far, the best night i've had this year was this past saturday at the
Orpheum. 77 years young Yoko Ono,
in a low-cut black pantsuit, hat and trademark shades, confidently strutted and sashayed across the stage, while Sean Lennon traded off between guitar, bass and piano for her songs that mutated from futuristic jazz, dance, techno, drone and funk. although Ono's music may have settled into more of an avant-pop format since her earlier recordings with John Lennon, she still has the power to shock and provoke with her unique and unorthodox vocal delivery. through howls, shrieks, moans of ecstasy and cries of agony, Ono still astounds, baffles and leaves her audience with a polarizing opinion. the crowd loved every second of it, including those who couldn't fully grasp everything presented. i was blown away! here's my favourite part...

Yoko Ono's own words:
The night was hot! The whole audience gave a standing ovation to Lady Gaga from the minute she appeared on the stage to when her turn was over. And that is saying a lot. That meant people were standing through the long, long songs – THE SUN IS DOWN and IT’S BEEN VERY HARD. It’s a record! At the end of IT’S BEEN VERY HARD, Lady Gaga started to play the piano with her high heel shoes, and I went up on the top of the piano and started jamming lying down. Right away, Lady Gaga climbed up on the piano right next to me, and two of us jammed, in tune, of course. I am sure the audience would never forget this night… You can say that two of us came from one clay...

i may not enjoy Gaga's music, well critiqued by MIA on this page, but the Lady killed it - showmanship impersonated! i also give her props for wearing a bejeweled see-through-behind bodysuit, perhaps as a nod to Ono's Bottoms, excerpts of which were screened in the lobby & during the introductory film that opened the 3-hour show... i certainly respect the 24 year old pop star for making waves, like Ono has for decades before her.

while Ono's importance was eclipsed by her late husband's fame, then vilified by the press, her significance is transcendental. Yoko Ono is a radical artist, someone who requires an open mind in order to have her work appreciated. she stretches the limits of what society views as acceptable and never ceases to create an opportunity for the viewer to step back and reflect...Thanks for being so brilliant and such an inspiration to so many women, said Lady Gaga as she saluted the 77 years old pioneer.

Yoko Ono—and truly there are no two better words to divide music fans—has unduly suffered more than most: despite being revered in vanguard art and music circles (having collaborated with John Cage and Ornette Coleman, including a performance at Carnegie Recital Hall in 1961) she is still best known as John Lennon’s widow. because of this her music has rarely been given due attention, which is strange since, of all the Beatles-related recorded output, Ono has released the most musically adventurous albums. she even struck solid gold twice... thankfully, not everyone was ignoring her. new wave and punk acts such as the B52s, Lene Lovich, and Patti Smith could hear behind what most thought were atonal improvisations and even Sonic Youth recognized her influence in their tribute to musical innovators, 1999’s SYR4: Goodbye 20th Century.

Saturday's reconstituted Plastic Ono Band also included Yuka Honda & Cornelius, the phenomenal tUnE yArDs, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Carrie Fisher, Harper Simon, Wu-Tang Clan's Rza, Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon & Thurston Moore, Vincent Gallo, Perry Farrell, Nels Cline, Mike Watt, Money Mark,... Ono's message resonates long after the last note of the night:

A DREAM YOU DREAM ALONE IS ONLY A DREAM
A DREAM YOU DREAM TOGETHER IS REALITY!

GIVE PEACE A CHANCE!

YES, I'M A WITCH,
I'm a bitch,
I don't care what you say,
My voice is real.
My voice speaks truth,
I don't fit in your ways.

I'm not gonna die for you,
You might as well face the truth,
I'm gonna stick around for quite awhile.

Each time we don't say what we wanna say, we're dying.
Each time we close our minds to how we feel, we're dying.
Each time we gotta do what we wanna do, we're living.
Each time we're open to what we see and hear, we're living.

We'll free you from the getthos of your minds,
We'll free you from your fears and binds,
We know you want things to stay as it is,
It's gonna change, baby.
