ROCKTOBER

my post YoGa life has been rich so far! last week's night time shows brought on even more splendor & soul! here's a patchwork of the super lo-fi mobile pics i took with video illustrations & songs by my top picks: CocoRosie, Lissie, Caribou, Glass Candy & Tom Tom Club... i love LA!!!

COCOROSIE at the Henry Fonda Music Box...

CocoRosie is a vocal duo comprised of sisters Bianca & Sierra Cassidy. Sierra became a singer songwriter & poet in New York when she decided to contact her estranged sister Bianca, who is classically trained & was studying opera in Paris. together, they veered into the unexpected creative enterprise of record making. on wednesday, they overcame the insular boundaries of their make-believe world to produce something spectacularly elegant & sonically intriguing. special mention goes to TEZ - human beatbox extraordinaire & total badass...

LISSIE at The Troubadour...

Californian transplant Lissie Maurus manages to belt out impassioned vocals with unparalleled strength! think country-tinged rock of late-60s, early-70s Laurel Canyon vibes, with a pinch of Fleetwood Mac. not wholly celestial, grounded as it is in spit and sawdust, but reaching for an emotional connect with the listener that few new artists can aim for without sounding forced. give the girl a second and she’ll steal your heart; give her another album and she will, quite possibly, become untouchable. GO LISSIE!

CARIBOU at the Henry Fonda Music Box...

dance music as if it's made out of water... Caribou’s live set is the perfect fusion of electronic and organic, with Snaith occasionally taking up duties as a second drummer during the hectic jam sessions, creating an lush wall of rhythm. the experience seamlessly goes from fuzzy, trippy & vast to wonky, wonderful & fun! Caribou sounds authentically retro and yet utterly contemporary at the same time. it’s simply impossible to fault Snaith and his crew when they play live.

Glass Candy’s live sets are decidedly more energetic than its more slumberous, drug-induced studio recordings, which is why i was grateful to get to the venue just as they took the stage... i hadn't seen them since this show a few years back, and it was really nice to catch their flavour of synth infused hippie disco to end the night...

TOM TOM CLUB at The Echoplex...

in 1981, during a break from their band Talking Heads, Chris Frantz & Tina Weymouth recorded the first Tom Tom Club record down in Nassau, Bahamas. creating a funky hybrid of dance, soul and reggae with a completely different sound from Talking Heads, it was their first gold album. the first single from that album, “Wordy Rappinghood,” was an international smash. the second single, “Genius Of Love,” was one of the very first hip hop hits and has been recorded and sampled by more than fifty different artists from Grand Master Flash to P Diddy, and Mariah Carey. Tom Tom Club has recorded six albums. the band has always been made up of great friends and family. Tina & Chris were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2002. this past sunday at the echoplex, they gave me a glimpse of what it was like at CBGB in the early 80s... RESPECT!
