HAPPY THREE KINGS DAY!!!
cheers to Gaspar, Melchior & Balthazar!
special cheers to my Granny in the sky, who made such an
event of this day when we were kids! between the 5 of us
(brothers & cousins, all boys), whoever got the crown
would then pick her as our queen... of course!
her name was Josette. she was a tough lady & a devout catholic.
when Ali, my paternal grandfather, suddenly died of a heart
attack in Brussels in the mid 50s, instead of taking in the
pension she was awarded by the company he was the CEO of,
she dropped off her kids at her sister's for several months to
go to the company's HQs in Paris & train for an entry level job,
to come back to Brussels & work at the company for a living.
she climbed up the ladder only to find herself years later
holding the same position her late husband had held!
she spent her retirement cruising between Belgium & England
in her beloved 2CV, translating books in her spare time for
extra cash. here's the cool cover of one of these books:
Josette is the first adult relative i got honest with about
smoking cigarettes, when i was only 13... from that point
on, each time i had lunch at her pad, we'd finish it off with
a glass of sherry & one of her davidoff cigarettes,
which made me feel sooo adult haha!
it was our little secret.
