THOR ☆ planningtorock

who cares about the plot or possibly lack thereof, this looks crazy & i'm psyched! Natalie Portman rules. as for Chris Hemsworth's killer bod, i say gaddayum!!!

i'm also psyched about Janine Rostron! Berlin-based London-born musician & conceptual artist, she's the creative force behind Planningtorock, which i've been a fan of ever since i saw her open for The Knife then later on for Hot Chip, 4 or 5 years ago... fresh off her recent collaboration with The Knife (clip of it at bottom of this page), she's about to release Planningtorock's new album simply titled W. here's W's first single - DOORWAY (MP3):

DONATE NOW!

...an extraordinary wave of people power is flooding the Middle East, but autocratic regimes are responding with violence -- and Egypt-style internet blackouts. let's blackout-proof the protests by providing satellite communications technology and support teams to key organizers:

Donate Now!

sending white light to my relatives in Barhain who depend on the rest of the family from Europe to Capetown to Miami & beyond, to report back to Manama what's actually going on just outside their house...

as for the liberation movement in Lybia, here's their page.

radiohead rules

Radiohead is the only band i have loved absolutely non-stop from way back in the early nineties all the way to the present! their latest album is out now - The King Of Limbs... this new video was directed by Garth Jennings & choreographed by Wayne McGregor:

Radiohead ☆ LOTUS FLOWER MP3

meanwhile, with Cortez Brothers directors Doble Nelson at 180 today...

Doble Nelson's viral film for Diesel is hysterical, and i love this uber simple & highly effective promo that got them one of their Gold Lions in Cannes:

cut copy now

this Cut Copy video for Need You Now by Keith Schofield was shot on one Saturday this past December in Atwater Village, from the crack of dawn through dinner time, in typical music video fashion - on a shoestring budget with a talented group of friends & drama-free pros coming together to support each other for the glory; not for the money! this is why most of us stick to commercials & the politics of advertising - they pay the bills & allow us to do fun projects like this one from time to time. here are some super lo-fi mobile phone pics i took that day (click on images to enlarge), and a few tunes to keep you dancing through the weekend. special mention to the band members for being so chill; check out Zonoscope...

VD KISSES!

Aliens aside, here's every 80s movie in 4 minutes:

this cover doesn't do justice to the original, but the clip is fun - featuring the cast of Take Me Home Tonight: Topher Grace, Anna Faris, Teresa Palmer, Dan Fogler, Demetri Martin, etc...

i'm back in Silver Lake, after a few weeks of house sitting by the beach. i have to admit, i actually miss the Westside and how unhip/uncool/uneventful & peaceful it is... sigh!

as for
V Day, back on the "
Eastside" where we keep it klassy...

VALENTINE'S (3 PLAYLISTS)

when brainstorming the slogan for its brand of condoms, Chanel could have gone with "Cover your stump before you pump" or even "Protect your rump before you hump" -- but instead the catch line is merely: "KEEP IT CLASSY." oh, the rich. so minimalist... WIN!!!

do the NASTY but keep it CLASSY! if your heart hasn't turned to stone, let it soar & let go... VIVE L'AMOUR!!!

instead of making a playlist of typical lovey dovey songs, the following one celebrates the more obscure side of the heart, because true love is survival -- in embracing our primal darkness, we may consolidate it & make room for the light shining in each & everyone one of us... all i'm saying is:
Photobucket
lets kick off this short mix with the most beautiful murder ballad of all time, followed by a few funkier jems & a little rock'n roll:

it's been over a month since i posted fun party mixes, and so, in the name of love, here are 2 more - one made in Miami this past January; the other made in LA last December... totaling another 133 party tunes -- die on the dancefloor... enjoy & share the wealth:

we're all connected

i love this new WWF spot from Ogilvy & Mather Mexico, directimated by Mato Atom... we're all connected indeed!

after seeing Peter Bjorn & John, meeting George Herms, forefather of the Beat Generation, was last week's highlight. it's difficult to pin down his amazing multimedia assemblage - a free-jazz opera with large-scale sculptural instruments, live and recorded video, Bobby Bradford and the Mo’tet, the Theo Saunders group, and the voice of soprano Diana Briscoe... the show started in reverse with a curtain call & ended with an invitation to explore the stage being slowly dismantled! all i can say is that it was an extremely touching happening, coloured with a sharp sense of humour! George Herms isn't merely an artist; GEORGE HERMS IS ART!

earlier in the week, i was back at Soho House for Adria Petty's presentation of her documentary on her friend Regina Spektor - Live In London:
Photobucket
Adria is a sweetheart. so is Tom Petty, her supportive dad who was in the room... later that evening, Mel Gibson came up to the bar & ordered what looked like something that would fuel the crazy that has been reported in the tabloids... this was my cue to head to the safety of my bed!

friday night, i swung by the super cramped, overly crowded & ambitious opening at This LA, where a few directors i know presented art work, such as Molly Schiot whose piece i never got to see due to how packed & uncomfortable the space was. but here's a fun short she did with the sexy Malin Akerman & the adorable Biba... real art on da face:

later friday evening, i headed to another party in Silverlake, at the space that housed Urb Magazine way back when, now the home of Dirty Robber & World War Seven:

i wrapped up the weekend with a farewell dinner for a friend leaving for 3 months, to work on Marvel Studios' The Avengers... sounds like a fun project! our little gathering was like a mini USC Film School reunion:

Gondry Doucet Peter Bjorn John

Photobucket
sunday night, the Flux Artist Series at Soho House hosted the acclaimed Michel Gondry who presented the film-book he made with Julie Doucet. LOOOOOOOVED IT! i just luv the guy for going from the Green Hornet back to a gig of such a different scale & scope... later, Becky Stark joined the pianist & sang while Michel played the drums. too cuuute!!! as usual, my super lo-fi mobile pics come with tunes i dig... Peter, Bjorn And John's latest is included. thanks to Valida, i actually saw their super intimate show this monday; total mayhem, best way to kick off the week... here we go:

EGYPT

i highly recommend setting aside your CNN, Yahoo News or other corporately biased channels. instead, follow the facts on AL JAZEERA, which has demonstrated fearless journalism without all the bullshit sensationalistic commentary... major props to Al Jazeera!

what is going on in Egypt is of such magnitude! the closest i have ever come to experiencing something like this was the ensuing transitional government of a military coup. fighter jets looming over Caracas & all. sure i was shielded by the blanket of diplomatic immunity & would have had an easy way out if things went south, but i was there. i imagine Egypt is like that multiplied by the millions; this is a People's revolution with the military only standing by so far, thank God!

i find it baffling that some of my American friends are so self-centered that for instance, they gloss over the big picture only to focus on their fellows who they say are stuck on a cruise ship on the Nile. of course, i understand their concern & i wish them to to be safe. everyone deserves it. but guess what? if you're American, and you chose to vacation overseas with your American passport, maybe you really should give it some more thought. make informed choices, and don't expect to be saved just because you're American & you actually took a risk; dig a little deeper! where exactly are you going? do you really want to spend time in a place that is nothing short of a dictatorship? can you understand that public order in such a place may suddenly disappear? do you really have to feed into the economy of a government so corrupt it is destined to be toppled? because it might happen... and that's precisely what's going on. tough luck! hell, i won't purchase or even drink Fiji water because i refuse to indirectly support the shady Fijian dictatorship which overtly oppresses Gays & Lesbians. i'm just saying, know what's going on, consider the potential impact of your decisions, be clear on what you might get yourself into or what you might bring upon others & yourself. regardless, you will undoubtedly be evacuated, at the expense of your fellow taxpayers...

anyhew, my heart does go out to my Egyptian friends who were born & raised in this mess, aren't responsible for their luck in life, and find that if they are privileged, all they ever knew & owned hangs in the balance or might be stripped away. i admire them for standing up for themselves against great odds, and for doing their very best to keep things as peaceful as possible, and i am keeping them in my thoughts. i respect Egyptians for challenging the status quo & overthrowing a regime that has wronged them for 30 years. oh, and maybe, just a little, i hope the cruise ship on the Nile won't charge our fellow Americans for however many extra days they remain on their ship, safely; that would like totally kinda suck, like totally for suuure! more on what these particular Americans mean & the unfortunate foreign policies our great nation has inherited:

nights turn into days...

i'm not so sure about the whole witch-house trend that CREEP (Lauren Flax and Lauren Dillard) is lumped in; it's all soooo last year, now & even then! but i like this song a lot, particularly Deadboy's remix... while her bandmate delivers some of the best remixes today, The xx‘s Romy Madley-Croft keeps on lending her breathy, gothy, lovelorn signature thing. with 808s & sickly synths, Flax and Dillard’s music has a less fucked-up sound than that of their peers, unlike most drag, it doesn’t drag, it has a real 4/4 momentum to it. if anything, CREEP puts the house in witch-house, while Deadboy keeps it fun & funky:

the track's new video was directed by the Fischer half of Fischerspooner:

let's reel it in with another exciting remix from Evil Nine; what Daft Punk does for robots, Evil Nine does for zombies! the industrial dancefloor vibe of this remix evokes another sound of my past days of glory -breakbeat- while keeping things modern enough for today's saturday night fever:

stomping electro drums, ‘80s Italian horror-movie synths, dirty punk basslines, punctuated by the amazing Róisín Murphy no less - WIN WIN!!! i'm such a fan of hers. with this fashion forward lady in mind, i'm compelled to turn to an unrelated new collection i dig - Thierry Mugler's latest:
Photobucket
did the man lay off the botox & roids long enough to think clearly again?! no longer able to squeeze into his own clothes, did he realize it was time to step aside?! in any case, that's what happened, and in the best possible way. pushing the Mugler mantle to new boundaries is Nicola Formichetti, the fashion house’s new creative director. here's my top 9:
