SPACE FIGHTER by LENO LOVECRAFT

i haven't posted a playlist since october. i got busy with work but when things slow down after the holiday season, i'll get back to it... meanwhile, i just took a few minutes to upload this one put together last month... around halloween i saw the very best bad movie i've seen in a really long time - Saturn 3 - directed by Stanley Donen (best remembered for Singing In The Rain), starring Kirk Douglas, Farrah Fawcett, Harvey Keitel & the amazing rapist robot Hector:

it's one of those movies where you just know that everyone involved wishes it had never been made. Keitel is sent to the shuttle to help Kirk & Farrah who are running behind on whatever project it is they're supposed to be working on. It's easy to see why: Kirk & Farrah spend most of their time playing chess, jogging, sipping cocktails & doing the nasty... Keitel & his sidekick robot soon become attracted to Farrah Fawcett. "You have a beautiful body," Keitel tells Fawcett in what has to be the worse come on line ever written in a movie, "Can I use it?" Geeenius!!! so cue Farrah being menaced by the robot with lots of meaningless running around cool spaceship-like hallways...

still, you just have to watch it! it's kinda funny,
and Farrah's style is absolutely flawless throughout!

i recommend just projecting it during a party or show for the visuals alone, trust!!! i started this playlist with music from the movie (track #28) & went from there, expanding to current & more classic tunes. it's eclectic as usual but more in the loungey side. it's not as much of a party mix but more of a digestive one...

last month i finally got to see The xx live. i had goose bumps throughout the show. the 4 members band was reduced to 3 due to one of them dropping out of the tour due to exhaustion or so i heard. they nearly canceled their LA appearance but folded to everyone in LA begging them to go ahead anyway. i got to see them wing it without the 4th member for the first time & they totally killed it. i love every single one of their songs, which remind me of so many different bands from different eras all at once... i've been adding their songs to my playlists ever since i first heard this cover. the only 2 ones from their album i haven't already shared (an original & a remix by them of one of their own songs) was thrown into this mix...

all artists in this mix are credited properly so i'll let you look
into them yourselves if you have to know more, then
again, you probably already know it all, right?!

there's something oddly relaxing about the opening track from Alice In Wonderland & then some fun stuff from The Muppet Babies... i just had to! one of my favorites in here is the song Serge Gainsbourg wrote for Françoise Hardy at #20; the song is about saying goodbye yet it has such a fun vibe to it... French 60s pop aside, there's some ghanaian high life, carribbean funk, La Lupe's touching "Ultimo Adios" at #37, The Cadets at #10, Amadou & Mariam's haunting "Je pense à toi" at #22 (check out Sabali posted here & here), Nancy Sinatra's duet with Lee Hazlewood at #24, some classic Xscape at #26, Blackroc, Kelis and then a bunch of newer tunes, remixes & covers to keep things current: Active Child, Amanda Blank by Yuksek, Sébastien Tellier, Othello Wolf, NightWaves, Marina & The Diamonds by The Phenomenal Handclap Band, Blackroc, O. Children by The Golden Filter, Penguin Prison by The Sound of Arrows, Universaldo at #17 (i love this one!), William Fitzsimmons, etc... another new song i love but isn't in here is Charlotte Gainsbourg's duet with Beck; click here to find the video at the bottom of the link... also, The Middle East's "Blood" at #40 is really pretty!

i threw in some old school drum'n bass by Omni Trio at #33, which always makes me wanna go back to the nineties when i used to dance to this stuff with complete abandon... not so new but still amazing at #32, James Figurine did such a great cover of the 80s Belgian song My Suitor, which i most recently posted here... trevin & rob who together were called cobrakai directed this video for James' The Postal Service, made with basically no money & all friends, most of us former USC film school mates... we're all in it, maybe you can find me in it... where's waldo?!

(sǝssɐןƃuns & ʇǝʞɔɐɾ ʞuıd ʇoɥ ǝɥʇ uı ǝuo ǝɥʇ ɯ,ı)

there's a little house here & there... first, The Revenge's Night Flight at #12, featuring Stevie Wonder who takes over the track 4 minutes into it. lastly at #45 to close the mix with a bouncey redo of the classic 80s Ten City song That's The Way Love Is, cuz baby, it's all about love! party on...

thanksgiving this year was the mellowest i've ever had, which was exactly how i wanted it. i cooked with 2 close friends & the 3 of us had a chill evening of eating, coloring & going out to see a late screening of The Fantastic Mr. Fox which is an adorable movie:

this is a random mix of pics from a lunch at square one & a walk with Chicho through echo park with a pit stop at café chango:

it's all about the uniforms!!! i know why my mother loves them so much! first, because the husband matches the wife (hell, he even dresses like her & she shaves her head too, ah true love!!!), then because she loves everything that matches! she used to dress my brothers & i all the same when we were young, same everything except sometimes for the colors, although they had to be complementary to each others'. the whole matching uniform thing probably comes from the years my folks spent in strict boarding schools with super preppy uniforms or something; repeating what we know is instinctual i guess... cool, let me add this to my list of things to talk to my therapist about. who knows what's on the other side of it all?

my brother Eric emailed me this pic he took last week
in the most expensive city in the world - moscow:

and Jonathan who travels around the globe to run marathons, recently broke his record in philly... no pics though. he'll be here in the spring for the LA marathon... i love my family so much, i can't wait for the 5 of us to meet up in miami for the holidays!
