it's a celebration of disco decadance in its myriad mutations,
classic and contemporary. At the Grand Star Jazz Club,
943 N. Broadway, Los Angeles CA 90012 (in Chinatown):
on the 6th of December, Belgium & many other parts of the "western" world observe Saint Nicolas Day... St. Nic is the real deal! Santa Claus is the lose interpretation of Saint Nicolas fabricated by the Coca-Cola company for advertising purposes to boost end of the year sales! capitalism at its best... so lets be real this December 6th & give each other some love without the coke infused aspirations... although, as i'm typing these words, i'm enjoying a real glass bottled Mexican coke with actual cane sugar! oh life is so full of contradictions...
and now, here's a little history lesson:
Saint Nicolas is the patron saint of students & children. on December 6th, children (and now adults as well) receive gifts from Saint Nicolas (aka Père Noël on December 25th , trans. Father Christmas i.e. Santa Claus). Saint Nicolas travels with his "shadow", a dark companion called Père Fouettard (trans. "Father Whip" aka Peter The Black aka Bogeyman) who follows Saint Nicolas & reminds him of just how each child has behaved during the past year. Saint Nicolas rewards wise children with presents. Père Fouettard seeks the misbehaving ones for a spanking or punishment with his long black whip!
