LA BOUM (playlist) + Tenori-On + LITTLE BOOTS + Automatic Lover by Dee D. Jackson...

Photobucket

LA BOUM - MP3 downloads
(14 more tunes for your iTunes)

at the last minute, i was invited to see LA's CASXIO at Bordelo last night. i was pleasantly surprised & open this playlist with their song "Seventeen" remixed by NOEL ZANCANELLA.

NY's THE VIRGINS play tonight at the Wiltern. "Teen Lovers" is a cool song... i follow with a new FAKE BLOOD remix of "Stuck on Repeat" by LITTLE BOOTS. for another version of the same song go to this February mix (it's track #15). i have a feeling Little Boots is going to blow up. why? cuz i'm a dog person yet she posted this & i luv it:
Photobucket

Denmark's KASPER BJØRKE nails it as usual, this time with NY hotties THE PIERCES currently doing a few shows in NY & Brooklyn. i still love "Thunderstorm" which i posted last year on this playlist (track #40)... i'm really digging the whole new wave vibe by GO GO CHARLTON remixed by fellow Frenchie HYPNOLOVE who also does a fun remix of Sebastien Tellier's La Ritournelle. you can hear it on myspace. the original is track #41 on this January playlist & click here for the video.

i love what A-TRAK did for Nike Plus; i've listened to this one on repeat many times. here are some pix i took of him with his girlfriend Kid Sister... i'm also very fond of Italy's BROKE ONE who keeps putting out some fun original tracks & remixes... as for tunes i don't mention here, look them up yourselves.

if you don't get my reference to "La Boum" here's a clue:

aaaaah le cinéma français!!! "La Boum" introduced us to the beautiful Sophie Marceau; "Léon" to the irresistible Natalie Portman, etc etc... French directors have impeccable taste in girls!!!

check out Little Boots doing a cover of Hot Chip. it's delicious!
here's her cute intro about it:
"ok are you ready for the FUN?!? here is cover of hot chip's ready for the floor, its not exactly perfect but best i can do on the amazing tenorion!!! i turned the light off so u can see a bit better... and so u can't see my hair... i don't even wanna talk about it........ also can i just say the words were on the computer that's why i keep looking at the screen... like a berk."

Media artist Toshio Iwai and Yamaha have collaborated to design a new digital musical instrument for the 21st century, TENORI-ON. A 16x16 matrix of LED switches allows everyone to play music intuitively, creating a "visible music" interface.
The TENORI-ON is a unique 16 x 16 LED button matrix performance instrument with a stunning visual display. For DJs & producers it is a unique performance tool enabling them to perform using MIDI and load the TENORI-ON with samples to 'jam/improvise' within their set BPMs.

on this Video it seems lame at first but watch it all the way through:

The TENORI-ON 16 x 16 LED button matrix is simultaneously a performance input controller and display. By operating and interacting with the LED buttons and the light they produce you gain access to the TENORI-ON's numerous performance capabilities. The TENORI-ON provides six different performance and sound/light modes for broad performance versatility, and these modes can be combined and used simultaneously for rich, complex musical expression.

Little Boots in LA

i love
LITTLE BOOTS...

she will be DJ'ing at
A Club Called Rhonda this Thursday.
i'm unfortunately going to miss it as i'm starting a 4 week long break on Thursday morning. hence no more internet, blogging, work, parties & stress for the next 3 to 4 weeks woohoo. my fun will be limited to focusing on my own mental/physical health. but go if you can & tell me all about it when i'm ready to jump back in the game. trust me, i''ll come back bigger & stronger than ever, sometime in August... when i won't be "Stuck On Repeat."

i posted some of her songs in this playlist & this one.

echo park records (playlist)

this post needs a soundtrack! Saturday night i had the best times at the Echoplex. it was a last minute decision to go & i'm extremely glad i did. here's more music --a sweet sixteen-- fit for the reading:

most of the artists in this playlist, Chromatics, Mirage & Crystal Castles for sure, have made it in previous playlists posted on this blog. they rule!!! i still can't stop listening to Chromatics' cover of Kate Bush's "running up that hill." Crystal Castles will be in LA sometime in March. i hope you enjoy them as much as i do. this playlist ends on some harder beats by Daft Punk then none other than Berlin's Boys Noize & Siriusmo. i wrap it up with the infectious dancefloor anthem of 2008: "Stuck on Repeat" by Little Boots & MiRAGE's encouraging "I Won't Stop Loving You."

i couldn't make it to the Echoplex on friday, for St. Vincent. i really dig Annie Clark & hope to soon have another opportunity to see her perform...
on the upside, i went to the Echo Park Records party for Alexis' birthday (who kindly got back to me about my rsvp)... the line-up was phenomenal. Ida from Glass Candy is mad hot & soooo cute; you just want to hug her & never let her go. this image is all fuzzy but i didn't take this pic (the 2 other ones in this post that i'm in, i was actually holding the camera). this one's still great. besides, i'll take blurry over getting a flash blinding my eyes anytime, no doubt:
Photobucket
isn't she de-licious? de-lovely? de-viiine? de-groovy?!!! after all, doesn't Ida hail from the City of Roses: Portland Oregon? yep, "made in Portland" is the best!!! or are they from New Jersey, the so-called garden state? i guess that would make sense. this was my first time seeing Glass Candy perform. i was excited... ok, we'll get back to Glass Candy in a bit. earlier, we parked right by this crazy scary monster Hummer; i bet its owner has a tiny penis:
Photobucket
we got to the Echoplex early, although the birthday crew had been drinking for a while. when An walked into the bathroom she found a girl head down on the floor who insisted she just needed a little more time. it wasn't even 10pm yet. classy! anyhew, this is the Echoplex:
Photobucket
the night started with Appaloosa. i had never heard of them before. they were great; it was a nice surprise. i introduced myself to Anne Laure, the singer, who is from Paris. her partner Max is from London...
Photobucket
aren't they cute? they are now touring with
Cat Power...
here's fiancés Trevin & An in the crowd:
Photobucket
Guns'n Bombs warmed up the room with good beats:
Photobucket
east side LA locals Los Super Elegantes took over the stage & rocked the crowd in English, Spanish & French, my 3 main languages! i had never seen them either & loved their energy. Milena setting up:

Photobucket
i love the sound of a trumpet:
Photobucket
Nate who's with Stones Throw (another kick ass label) had been celebrating with the birthday boy for a while before gracefully parting the crowd to join us by the stage:
Photobucket
i'll stick to old school fisher price xylophones for kids but i think it's sexy to play the trumpet, or any other brass wind instrument...

An & I between acts:
Photobucket
i don't usually wear sweatshirts with words printed on it, but it's not like this one advertises a label, which i think is really bad taste. it just says "Brussels" which is where i'm from, technically. then again i could say i'm from Cape Town, or from Caracas or Portland, Oregon... whatever, i'm an Angeleno! check out these 2 loud British girls; i snapped their pic before handing them my lighter:

finally
Glass Candy takes the stage:

i hadn't danced at a show in soooo long. it felt great. i'm so in love with Ida!!! Arabian Prince (former member of N.W.A.), fueled more fancy footwork for the rest of the night:

i'm not sure why the firemen were outside when we left:

before we get into this any further, let me explain... with the clouds & the rain finally gracing our city of angels, i'm taken back to my Belgian homeland with long wintery days of grey skies & rains. so i started this one out with some rather mellow & melancholic tunes... and then everything changed on sunday night when i swung by a party at the chateau's bar marmont (invite here posted). i'm so grateful to be in LA missing Belgium rather than the other way around. LA rules!

Photobucket

i'm not a paparazzo. i don't take photos of celebrities. there were a few at the party. this is Hollywood after all. besides, what's a celebrity anyway? it's all relative... with an old skewl blackberry in tow, i snapped a few photos of those who had something refreshing & sweet to say. now, whatever i'm told is none of your business. you just had to be there... however, what these angels look like is fair game. here we go...

as fun as it was, i snuck out at 12:30am with a smile on my face. it's a common belief that arriving late is still fashionable. sure it can be, for some... i might be "growing" cuz i'm so not digging the trends anymore. look around Silverlake & Echo Park & you're guaranteed a trend indigestion! style is so much harder to come by, and i fortunately got a nice dose of it on sunday. god bless! and so, in the name of style,
i left fashionably early! c'est la vie...

to best describe the vibe of the night, check out
THIS VIDEO
of Duck Soup's "aNYway" (it's track #23 on today's playlist).

this 2nd video for the same song is hysterical:

for style & substance, look no further than Sirens & Sailors in Echo Park. Jennifer Phillips who opened her store in 2000 has impeccable taste & supports the best local designers, jewelers, artists: Grey Ant, Brian Lichtenberg, Petro Zillia, Smoke & Mirrors, Alex & Chloe, Han Cholo, etc... oh, and the backroom vintage stuff is $ick & cla$$ic!

as i mentioned earlier, i start off with mellower tunes & this playlist doesn't pick up the pace for a while... i'm a Serge Gainsbourg purist, but i love the cover of "Je suis venu te dire que je m'en vais" i.e. i came by to tell you i'm leaving (you) by Belgian synth pop queen Jo Lemaire (track #2). this version rocked my world before i even was a teenager in the early 80s. just lay down on the floor with your headphones on really loud & stare at the ceiling; you might feel like you're floating on water.

i indulged in some more France Gall... one a dramatic
80s pop ballade; the other one is a catchy 60s hit:

#16 is a cute early 80s song about clothes by Belgian pop star Lio. speaking of clothes, how about the Viktor & Rolf show last week?!!! i just saw it on youtube, with a very pregnant Róisín Murphy performing 2 of her new songs to be released later this year. her attire conceals her big baby bump, which i'd say is a classy thing to do! it's rather classic in a world where every woman now flaunts her pregnancy... so today's playlist opens with a poor recording of the show. still, it gives you a good idea of how good her new album is going to be...

it's so good to see designers maintain a sense of humour instead of conforming to the rather boring restraint justified by the current recession...

i couldn't do a mix about loving LA without some Tupac!!! "Dear Mama" is my favourite Tupac song... i also threw in a few other classics from MJ, Janet, Lionel, Angie, Barbara Lynn, Pink Floyd, Françoise Hardy & oh yeah... Prince:

the mix gets banging with new dancefloor anthems & remixes... Ali Love to La Roux, Burns to Chromeo, Clock Opera to Cut Copy, Datarock to Digital Leather, Erick Hassle to Handsom Furs, Little Boots to Luke Top, Metronomy to Moodyman, Monarchy to Nosaj Thing, RJD2 to Röyksopp, Siopsis to Nancy Elizabeth, Private to Penguin Prison, a Daft Punk sample from the Tron Legacy soundtrack to Animalistics for the closing track "Los Angeles" & more...

enjoy & share the wealth!

fun stuff is everywhere i look these days!
at the top of my list is every single second of
every single minute i get to spend with Chicho:
Photobucket
Photobucket
Photobucket
btw, these bad ass Status Shades by Grey Ant
are selling fast at Sirens & Sailors:
Photobucket
they'll set you back $250 but that's a bargain,
if you consider how much more the Lanvin ones are:
Photobucket
don't get me wrong, i love Lanvin. the swarovsky crystals covered temples is just a little too bling for me... the Grey Ant ones also come in red, smoke & translucent with mirrored glass... look, the sun always shines in LA, you gotta have some nice shades... i know i know, if that's not a rationalization/justification then what is?! but i even wear mine in the rain! shit, i'm so hooked! besides, i'd rather sport something made in LA.

on another musical note, check out this really cool experiment based on the belief that the easiest way to change people's behaviour for the better is to make it fun to do.
it's called the fun theory:

to wind down, one of the coolest musical acts ever The Knife posted a trailer for their Charles Darwin Opera now playing:

when Andreas Nilsson curated their show at the El Rey in 2007, i was blown away! if i had a disposable income i'd be on a plane to Denmark or Germany or wherever this is playing... click here for more info.

LET LOVE RULE!
the MP3 to this is track #2 in this playlist posted in May.
