LA MILL Coffee

new place down the hill from my pad, check it out:

1636 Silverlake Blvd, Silverlake; 323.663.4441

The desire for life's simple pleasures doesn't rule out superlative quality: witness the Kobe Burger, or Shannon Tweed on Cinemax HD. Bringing you a peerless cup of Joe: LAMILL, opening today.

Styled after a mid-century, upscale clubhouse (vintage club chairs, 1800s brass chandelier), this gourmet café is new from the Alhambra beanery relied upon by everyone from KATSUYA to BASTIDE -- the romantic standby inspired by the cuisine of illegitimate Bostonites. Even the details support the excellence: espresso's served at 165 degrees, mochas're made with fresh chocolate ganache, and specialty drinks are truly special, i.e., the "Coffee and a Cigarette" features tobacco-infused whipped cream -- act now, before the state forces you to enjoy it on the sidewalk. The menu's from the Providence chef, and includes an Asian Pork Belly, arugula, and heirloom tomato sandwich, a pumpkin soup with crème fraiche, and frisée salad au lardon w/ coffee vinaigrette -- dressing of choice for truckers and air traffic controllers.

LAMILL opens at 6am with pastries, and starts slinging full breakfast at 8...

yikes! can we say gentrification any louder??? eh! who am i kidding!!! silverlake isn't cool anymore, it hasn't been in years. i just hope it doesn't get as bad as williamsburg in brooklyn. so far, i kinda like it, or am i getting old???! anyhew, if LA Mill Coffee is relied upon by Bastide, where Callum & Sara took me back when i still saw them, this place will be good (to this day, my favorite LA dining experience remains the 7 or so course dinner i had at Bastide!). i like Katsuya a lot too, even if Phil tells me it's a total rip off... i'll let u know if LA Mill Coffee is any good...

netty's, around the corner, where i used to get my favorite drunken shrimp, is being redone & revamped... i hear the people behind it are the people behind AOC, one of my favorite LA restaurants...
