week-end update

i spent Saturday in Malibu. the Pacific breeze is the best...

with Chicho on our favorite stretch of sand, down a hidden trail leading to the secluded private beach, just below Olivia Newton-John's fabulously cheesy "Santa Fe style" villa (although i'd trade it with my pad anytime!) with speakers right on the beach blaring a mix of top 40 hits & easy listening rock from the past 4 decades; it's hysterical but i always just walk by till i'm far enough for the sound of the ocean to drown out the music. of course, Chicho is all about getting physical so we usually end up walking the 4 to 5 miles up from Escondido to Point Dume & back, passing through Paradise Cove:

one day, hopefully before i'm senile, i'll be living on Escondido Beach!

on Sunday i went to an Eckankar service in Hollywood with Azalea. after that we went to the farmer's market around the corner. i'm still trying to find a fun way to cook my bok choy; i'd like to find a non-asian recipe, adapt it to a waterzooi (it's a Belgian chicken or fish stew with vegetables).
we had a late lunch at the Back Door Bakery, on their last day at their Silverlake Blvd & Effie Ave location. the bakery has been there for over 10 years, since i've been living up & over the hill (a pleasant 10 minute walk away) for already 10 years now --yikes, time flies!-- & the bakery was a neighborhood favorite well before i set anchor in the area... i haven't been a regular customer --i favor Cafe Tropical-- but i liked having them in my backyard, for their baguettes & apple or zucchini muffins. Azalea took this pic of me with her iPhone:

the owner of the building (who owns/runs the beauty salon/spa next door) wants to open a fancy restaurant instead. right next to it, the owners of A.O.C. (great tapas eatery for east siders & west siders to meet half way for a nice dinner) are opening a new place in lieu of netty's that closed a few months ago (i miss their drunken shrimp). i also swung by the new la mill coffee. i liked the look of it but it feels out of place, like too "New York meets West Hollywood." oh well, i'll get used to it i guess... i was telling Azalea, that the gentrification of Silverlake isn't worth shit to me unless Mishima opens in the hood as well. how can anyone put up with the annihilation of old school neighborhood digs, even the ones i don't care for so much or often go to, for fancy shmancy new places if we don't get some cheap yet healthy japanese cafeteria with american sized portions?!
as for the Back Door Bakery, they are trying to secure a new location, and are leaning towards a free space on Rowena Avenue... i ordered their chicken quesadilla that is made with tons of fresh vegetables in it as well (broccoli, celery, etc). it was delicicious. Azalea devoured her burger. we bumped into directors/artists Mike Mills & Miranda July, shielding their fair complexions from the california sunshine with huge straw hats. they form the cutest straw hat wearing couple, and look so happy together. it's cool to see a couple in love that isn't nauseatingly so haha! it was nice to briefly chat with them... if u haven't seen any of their work, then click on their names, look them up & watch their stuff!
