MJ: Behind The Mask

Michael Jackson may have moonwalked to heaven almost exactly two years ago, but his legacy lives on — as evidenced by an epic crowdsourced music video out today, directed by Dennis Liu, brought to life with @radical.media's team of forward thinking producers, editors and submissions from over 1600 fans. check Michael Jackson's website & click on image below for more details on the radical soup to nuts production of this project...

since March, fans were asked to contribute dance moves, lyrics and crowd reactions to the video via a dedicated website. using a split-screen template, fans uploaded their clips at the exact moment that move, lyric or reaction occurred in the video. together, all of these fan-sourced snippets were woven into one, cohesive video. in this way, Michael Jackson reminds us once again - You Are Not Alone!

@radical.media initially aimed to release the video in April, but due to the overwhelming fan reaction — thousands of submissions from 103 countries — director Dennis Liu says it took more time to churn out the final product. more about the process in this article.

it's a privilege for me to be part of the radical team, leading the way on multiple platforms, especially with non-traditional & interactive projects — see Chris Milk for instance... although Behind The Mask isn't interactive in the way that it requires a lot of clicking to view, it drew many participants together & pushes boundaries. “In terms of the tech aspect of it, I think the goal is to have interesting content that’s really watchable. You need to view it multiple times in order to see everything. I still think that’s a really interactive experience” — Dennis Liu. besides, it's a delight to give true fans an opportunity to participate on this level. the king of pop lives on...

CHRIS MILK ♡♡♡

i have to admit, one of the perks of being @radical.media is that i represent talent as creative & innovative as Chris Milk - the genius behind @radical.media experiential films The Johnny Cash Project, The Wilderness Downtown for Arcade Fire & now 3 Dreams of Black for Rome...
Photobucket
3 Dreams of Black is Chris Milk's latest film using WebGL to weave film with 2D cell & 3D interactive animation while showcasing the Chrome. Milk wrote & directed the experiment for the Rome album - by music producer Danger Mouse & composer Daniele Luppi, featuring Jack White & Nora Jones... @radical.media's phenomenal team of visionaries produced the experiential film, while taking on the support of Mirada for the animation & North Kingdom for 3D design. more on the technical aspects right here...

for fun, here's an older Chris Milk fave of mine for Gnarls Barkley:

beautiful people

last year, Paper Magazine's Beautiful People Party was a blast! this year's gathering was a bit tamer... either way, there was lots of eye candy & enough Hollywood clichés to laugh at, or with! a fun mix no doubt... here's more tunes for the weekend ahead & some beautiful people i caught on the fly in lo-fi mobile phone fashion, including friends & myself of course:

jimmyzine...epic

this past Sunday around Sunset on Sunset Blvd nonetheless, local favourite EPIC wrapped up my weekend by hosting JIMMY's release party over cocktails, music & a little performance... East Side fags & their homo honeys keep it real'n modern. they rule - period!!! here's my usual lo-fi mobile phone pics taken on the fly, with a few more tunes for fun:

all that jazz

...adorable video by Lorenzo Fonda for Metronomy's latest:

Metronomy ☆ THE LOOK MP3 ♡♡♡

i kicked off the weekend on the mellow side, with The Sweat Spot's monthly movie night. All That Jazz was on the program... iiiit's showtime!!!

as for daytime activities, here's a typical scenario... running into friends while hiking with the furry love of my life, or when shopping from a new downtown spot - the
Thvm Atelier with other local brands such as Ladyboys, Skingraft, Raquel Allegra & more - to the funnest store west of Vermont Avenue - Opening Ceremony... just flying through the radioactive breeze from Japan, like a hot bionic butterfly:

die antwoord + harmony korine

Umshini Wam is a short film by Harmony Korine starring Die Antwoord's Ninja and Yo-Landi with next level beats by DJ Hi-Tek... armed with uzis and rolling around the ‘burbs in wheelchairs — South African fellows Ninja and Yo-Landi decide to take their “shit to the next level” and “get the respect they deserve on the streets.” FOKKEN COOL...

Sushi...Party...LA Story

Murakami's fine sashimi over a bowl of brown rice is my kinda brunch. fresh & tasty, light yet full of the nutrients that get me going through work all the way to the occasional dance parties & gatherings... the spot is low-key & such a bargain, considering the sushi chef has the best contacts & gets the most desirable cuts. if you're a starfucker, Jake Gyllenhal & the likes go there a lot. over the years, i've bumped into Jake at most of of my favourite healthy eateries, so if he gets to one of them before me, it's safe to assume i'll love the food as well. besides, my japanese friends & foodies who live in LA introduced me to Murakami's as one of their faves...

last week, i went to the inaugural session of Secret Chambers - a new monthly with great music & a fun crowd at an awesome downtown spot... the Crocker Club is a low lit lounge in the converted basement vaults of the historic Crocker Bank. even though i didn't stay up late on this Tuesday, i had a really nice time while the party picked up. DJs Aaron Castle & Ashland Mines aka Total Freedom (of Mustache Mondays) play my kinda jams...

over the weekend, old friends Sara & Callum had a farewell party. barely back from working on a movie in New Zealand, they were off to Canadia for another big one - a James Cameron production of At The Mountains Of Madness, to be directed by the acclaimed Guillermo del Toro. after spending millions to get it all going, including Guillermo & Callum's very recent & expensive location scout, Universal pulled the plug the day before our party - another typical LA story! it's all good, Del Toro has another movie in the works, who knows where that one might take Sara away from me... regardless, the party must go on; we celebrated...

this party had a theme - dress like where you'd like to live for a year... my outfit was "Found In Translation!" basically, i'd love to be in Tokyo without having to step out of the Hyatt for an entire year, so i just wore my usual clothes but threw on a swanky kimono as a robe! although Sara was looking forward to what would have been a great gig in Canadia, she's a LA girl true & true; she has it down! her outfit was the one of the quintessential Beachwood Canyon babe on the go, you know, the kind you see everywhere at Mayfair market between yoga classes & work out sessions with some private trainer/healer/lifecoach, running around in tights, sneakers, sporty tank tops, random baseball cap with the name or logo of some studio, with a fancy organic iced coffee/tea in one hand & the latest iphone in the other - classic! although i'm sure her cup was later re-filled with Jesus juice, sooo Hollywood - imagine that: a nice industry Jewish girl sippin' on Jesus juice! it doesn't get any classier than that...

just cuz a touch of trippy grimy Belgian techno is always fun in small doses. i like The Subs. besides, the kid in the video kicks ass... hellz yeah:

harinezumi celebrity

lots of crazy shit being captured or reported on camera these days! you think you've seen it all, and then all hell breaks lose... to name a few: Mubarak got the message & was deposed... PBS sadly lost funding... Charlie Sheen & Galliano completely lost their marbles & their jobs... Qaddafi had already lost his mind & won't leave his job... Arcade Fire won a Grammy & Bieber fans got angry... Melissa Leo dropped the F-bomb at the Oscars... Lindsay Lohan stole some shit or became a lesbian again or something... meanwhile, i just shot my first digital video in over a decade. i warn you, this is deep! ladies & gentlemen, caught on Harinezumi, i present the Tintinettes in full dorky glory:

Matt Amato of The Masses has championed the Harinezumi camera ever since it came out. back from Tokyo where he spent time at the Harinezumi company to work on upcoming technologies & projects, Mr. Amato kindly gave me one of the latest Harinezumi cameras he brought home. i used it that very same evening! this Harinezumi 2+++ fits in the palm of my hand, and makes digital films & still frame pictures as weirdly lo-rez & awesome as the venerable Holga does for film. what it lacks for in fidelity, it more than makes up for it in aesthetics...

you see, i was part of the last generation of USC Film School students to have the privilege of being introduced to the craft with Super 8 film, before moving on to 16mm & video. my friend Saul & i were the very first 2 USC film students to shoot our projects on digital, before the school even had digital cameras. i had gotten my hands on what was then the brand new Sony VX1000 from a porn star friend, the amazing Annabel Chong, whom i cast in the film - fuck yeah!

somewhere along the way, i stopped making movies as my career helping those who make them got more interesting & my free time got too "busy" for personal films... so it's such a delight to have this minuscule digital camera that isn't designed to be perfect. it brings me back to the super 8 days. in fact, it's as close as super 8 as anyone can get with a digital camera... WIN WIN!

last night after dinner, i pulled the camera out of my pocket & captured a very silly "celebrity" moment with close friends - posted above. my LA gurrrls kick ass, like totally... fo sho!!!

back to Matt Amato & an outstanding Harinezumi team of artists i.e. Bruce LaBruce, Mark Borthwick, Agnès B, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Claire Denis, Miranda July, Harmony Korine, Errol Morris, Chan Wook-Park & Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon who always collaborates on cool projects... each artist directed & shot Harinezumi short films for IMPERFECT AS THEY ARE. this fun gathering traveled last year from New York to Paris, Tokyo & Los Angeles - here's Matt's harinezumi movie... Matt is curating a follow-up series as the Harinezumi technology advances & other established artists pick it up... his most recent video for Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros is epic, crisp & cinematic, while the one he directed & shot 6 months ago on the Harinezumi for a band i dig - Quadron - is magically lo-fi:

Matt Amato will continue to shoot some projects on the Harinezumi. i will shoot all mine with it... i took my usual set of super lo-fi mobile phone pics through dinner, leading up to the Harinezumi parking lot moment...
